Are you a Master’s student, PhD student or postdoctoral fellow interested in pursuing a career in industry? Many highly-educated graduates have been reporting difficulty obtaining their first job due to the requirement for experience outside of academia, something many graduates lack. For the second year running, LSCDS is teaming up with the Science Career Impact Project to offer graduate students and post-docs a unique opportunity to gain industry-related experience that can help them stand out in this competitive job environment: the Industry Team Case Study (ITCS).
What does the program entail?
Over the course of four months, teams work under the guidance of an industry professional to complete projects mirroring those you would see on the job in a variety of biomedical-related industries. These projects are meant to provide hands-on experience working on industry problems from start to finish. Last year, projects included a cross-study comparison of the efficacy and safety of drugs in a therapeutic area, and an investigation of the likelihood of regulatory approval in Canada of a new drug. In general, all projects involve exploring an area of interest, developing a thesis, conducting in-depth research, and presenting a final report to an industry panel.
When does the program take place?
Applications from graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are currently being accepted, and the program will begin its four-month cycle in February 2017.
What are the benefits of participating?
Participants in ITCS gain practical industry-related experience and develop skills needed to tackle real-world scenarios, all while enhancing their resumes. The program is also a great networking opportunity. One past participant said: “Having completed this case study, I feel better prepared for my future career in the pharmaceutical industry…I would highly recommend this experience to other PhD students if they wish to pursue a non-academic career. It not only opened my eyes, but also expanded my network.”
How to apply?
Applications for participation are due at 11:59PM on January 27, 2017. Applications can be made as individuals or in teams of 3-4. To apply, complete a Trainee Registration Form (found on the LSCDS website: http://www.lscds.org/events/industry-team-case-study/) and submit a 1- to 2-page resume. Applicants are expected to devote significant time and energy to this project and should display a strong interest in industry-related careers. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the ITCS team at [email protected].
