Mini-Networking Night on Medical Communications

Join us on Tuesday, March 21st for an evening of networking for research trainees interested in Careers in Medical Communications. With a guest to student ratio of 1:5, students can participate in engaging conversations in an relaxed atmosphere. Great way to build long-lasting connections with professionals that have successfully transitioned from academia to industry!




  • 6:00 – 6:10 p.m.:  Registration
  • 6:10 – 6:20 p.m.: Welcome remarks & Guests introductions
  • 6:20 – 7:20 p.m.: Structured Networking (3 round table sessions, 20 minutes per session)
  • 7:20 – 8:00 p.m.: Open Networking

* Light appetizers and a cash bar will be provided.

Guest Information

meryamMeryam Al-waadh, M.Sc.

Medical Writer, Inflamax Research Inc.


Meryam completed her undergraduate degree at McMaster University specializing in biotechnology and business management, she went on to complete her MSc in the Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology program at UofT. During her graduate studies, she pursued her interest in writing for various online web magazines and press releases for start-up companies. Her writing focused on scientific innovations, STEM careers, healthcare technology (The Bay St. Bull) and interviewing life science professionals for an interview series. Meryam has recently started as a Medical Writer and Analyst, Scientific Affairs with Inflamax Research, a clinical research organization specializing in the allergy, dermatology, ophthalmic and respiratory therapeutic areas.
There she is drafting regulatory submissions for ongoing clinical studies, working with various sponsors to identify study needs and ensuring research meets the required standards.

brittanyBrittany Matthews, Ph.D.

Medical Writer, Six Degrees Medical


Brittany Matthews is a skilled medical writer at Six Degrees Medical Consulting. In this role, she applies her in depth knowledge of pharmacology and clinical trials to provide innovative and strategic communications solutions for pharmaceutical and healthcare partners. Since joining Six Degrees, Brittany has been extensively involved in developing scientific content for various clinical trial programmes across many therapeutic areas. She works hand in hand with medical affairs and clinical operations teams in the planning and execution of scientific meetings, including clinical trial meetings, advisory boards, and sales training.  

Brittany brings a strong scientific background to her role at Six Degrees, acquired through a PhD degree in Pharmacology from the University of Toronto. She is an accomplished academic author, with 6 peer reviewed publications and 15 abstracts presented at national and international conferences. Upon completion of her PhD, Brittany was a Clinical Research Associate, where she developed patient recruitment materials and online education/support resources for physicians and patients. Brittany holds a Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP) designation and has over 6 years of experience in clinical trial management.

In her spare time, Brittany enjoys spending time with family and friends, keeping active with Pilates, and enjoying warm summers by the lake.



Kate Penney, M.Sc.

Medical Editor, Klick Health


Kate graduated from the University of Guelph with a BSc in Biochemistry, and went on to complete grad school at the University of Toronto with an MSc in Cell and Systems Biology. During school, Kate worked in several research labs studying crop science, molecular biology, and bacteriology.

Kate worked for 2.5 years as a Scientific Art Review Editor at Inc., an art house that illustrates University-level science textbooks. Kate has been a Medical Editor for the last 2 years at Klick Health, a digital marketing agency for Pharmaceutical companies.

In my spare time, Kate plays on several sports teams and volunteer at the Toronto Humane Society.



Kaidi Zhou, M.Sc.    

Senior Medical Writer, Metrix Group


Kaidi completed her MSc in Pharmacology at U of T, and has since pursued her interest in medical communications. This began with writing clinical study summaries as a freelance medical writer with SCRIPT Medical; editing scientific manuscripts as a research assistant at U of T; and editing educational materials as the editor of a U of T online pharmacology course. Kaidi then started as a medical writer at Metrix Group, a learning agency that specializes in custom learning solutions. There she designed and developed training materials on a range of pharmaceutical products and medical devices for clients in the healthcare, pharma, and biotech industries. In her current role as the senior medical writer at Metrix Group, Kaidi leads the medical writing team in delivering quality healthcare learning solutions.
