Maurice Shen, PhD
Head of Academic Relations at BenchSci
Maurice obtained his PhD. in Pharmacology from the University of Toronto in 2015. His thesis examined the physiological role of a novel dopamine receptor complex, the D1-D2 heteromer, in drug addiction and depression-related behaviours, as well as the associated neuroadapatations.
Maurice believes that the current research process can be greatly complemented by the recent advance in machine learning technology. He is dedicated to building a digital research tool that can benefit the scientific community as a whole by speaking to researchers and incorporating their needs into BenchSci.
Outside of work, Maurice is passionate about singing, particularly rock & roll. He has entered singing competitions twice. He also enjoys watching thriller and mystery movies. For outdoor activities Maurice likes to go hiking and biking in the summer, while during winter he loves snowboarding.
Ryan Doherty, PhD
President and co-founder at iamsick.ca
Dr. Ryan Doherty is a mHealth social entrepreneur and a strong proponent of open data, co-design and partnerships to accelerate innovation and improve our healthcare system. While working on his PhD in Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto & Structural Genomics Centre, he co-founded a digital health startup called iamsick.ca. While at the University of Toronto, he was a Massey College Junior Fellow and a co-chair of Massey Grand Rounds. Having completed his PhD in 2015, he currently leads iamsick.ca with a focus on improving access to healthcare services by empowering patients and enabling healthcare providers with a system-wide & patient-centered lens. Prior to his doctoral studies, he spent a year doing HIV/AIDS research in South Africa and Belgium. His passion is working on projects that leverage data & technology to improve equitable access to healthcare service and patient experience.
Arthur Li, IMBA, MSc
Commercialization consultant at Acroiss Consulting
Arthur Li is the founder of Acroiss Consulting. Since March 2017, he has been helping early-stage healthcare startups with their product commercialization. His main responsibilities include developing commercialization strategies, writing business plans, building financial models, creating pitch decks and connecting people. In his free time, he enjoys reading and writing on LinkedIn and his personal website.
Arthur was born and raised in China and travelled to Canada at the age of 18. He holds an International MBA degree (2017) from Schulich School of Business. Before that, he was trained as a formulation scientist (MSc, 2015) at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Toronto where he researched the applications of deep eutectic solvents in drug solubility enhancement.
