LSCDS Pharma, Biotech and R&D Mini Networking Night

On October 25th, the LSCDS Networking Team successfully organized a Mini-Networking event, marking the start of a series of networking gatherings for the year. Drawing an impressive crowd of 40 graduate participants and featuring seven distinguished panelists from Pharma or Biotech R&D, the evening served as a collaborative platform for knowledge and experience exchange.

Held in Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy building, the event opened with engaging introductions of our esteemed professional speakers, offering attendees insights into the backgrounds and expertise of the panelists. Trainees were then assigned to tables for four structured networking sessions, ensuring meaningful interactions with all professionals present. The night concluded with an open networking session, providing a fertile ground for forging connections based on shared interests. Notable representatives from ProteinQure, adMare BioInnovations, Deep Genomics Inc., FSD Pharma, BlueRock Therapeutics, and BenchSci shared their journeys bridging the gap between academia and industry, and contributed to the dynamic exchange of insights and opportunities. This event not only served as a platform for professionals and trainees across diverse fields but also offered a spotlight on the exciting opportunities available in the industry.

Panel Highlights

The event showcased an impressive lineup of panelists, including Dr. Andrew Zhai (Senior Scientist at ProteinQure), Dr. Ann Meyer and Dr. Kristy Lonergan from adMare BioInnovations, Dr. Leonardo Assuncao (R&D Scientist at BenchSci), Elli Kubarakos (Senior Research Associate from BlueRock Therapeutics), Antonia Day Bois (Research Associate at Deep Genomics), and Dr. Mohammad Evrahimazadeh (Pharmaceutical Scientist at FSD Pharma). Beyond sharing their personal experiences as former graduate students, the panelists illuminated the audience on incredible opportunities, such as adMare Academy talent programs, designed to kickstart and advance careers in the life sciences.

Structured Networking Session

During the dynamic networking session, participants delved into different topics, including the critical aspects of showcasing skills, navigating the transition from academia to industry, differentiating oneself for standout success in the recruitment process, gaining insights into the average daily life of industry professionals, and exploring strategies for effectively building work-life balance.

Standing Out in the Crowd

Antonia, a Research Associate at Deep Genomics, shared invaluable insights on differentiation in a competitive market. Her unique strategy as a freelance scientific writer at AZoNetwork showcased the power of unconventional approaches in excelling at scientific communications and content production, highlighting how distinctive paths can make one stand out in recruitment. Dr. Andrew Zhai and Elli Kubarakos complemented this narrative by sharing indispensable networking strategies, emphasizing the art of seizing opportunities at events like LSCDS and fostering collaborations through casual coffee talks and one-on-one discussions.

Building Career Foundations

During the event, Dr. Ann Meyer and Dr. Kristy Lonergan of adMare BioInnovations shared insights into a strategic approach for community engagement, particularly through programs like the Academy talent initiatives. This proactive method serves as a foundation for individuals to cultivate essential skills and establish valuable connections within the industry.

Transitioning Successfully

Dr. Mohammad Evrahimazadeh, a current FSD Pharma Inc. Scientist, shared his journey from his initial role in Dvija Psychedelics Corp. to the startup at FAD Pharma Inc. as a CRO medical writer. His insights into transitioning from the research field to various industry roles offered a recruiter's perspective. Dr. Evrahimazadeh underscored the significance of crafting a compelling storyline for one's experiences, leveraging skills from research to industry, including project management and problem-solving abilities.

The event concluded with a focus on the diverse roles within the industry, the need for effective communication, and the importance of continuous learning.

Melody Li is a third-year PhD student at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on the development and characterization of a vascularized heart-on-a-chip for better recapitulation of cardiac environment and pathology modelling.
