This week on LSCDS #ScienceNews and #Innovation, the first pig-to-human transplant was performed in Baltimore, Maryland. The recipient has been living for one week with the #xenograft heart. If successful, xenograft procedures like this could shorten transplant waits and has the potential to save millions of lives!

 

#2021 was the hottest year recorded by humans, ever. A recent study found that the shallowest 2000 meters of ocean absorbed more than 14 zettajoules (1021 joules) of heat compared to 2020. Oceans act as a buffer for our climate to keep it stable. Increased heat absorption poses a risk to accelerate climate change – read more about it here.

 

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the largest and most powerful #telescope ever launched. With the aim to revolutionize our understanding of the universe, the JWST will be able to reach the deepest reaches of space, where the first stars and galaxies were born 13 billion years ago. On January 8th, the telescope completed unfolding into its final form.

Marie-Christine Perry

Marie is a second year PhD student in Dr. Jayne Danska’s lab at SickKids. Her project is focused on studying the gut microbiota in adolescents at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. Marie grew up in Kelowna, British Columbia and enjoys hiking, rock climbing and discovering new music when not in the lab.
